Flickr Goes to the Dark Side: Angers Entire User Community

More changes are afoot at Flickr: last week, Flickr was integrated into MyBlogLog, and now Yahoo is forcing Flickr users to get Yahoo IDs by March 15 to maintain their accounts. Previously, I've praised Yahoo for its lack of heavy handedness in branding its social acquistions like Flickr and del.icio.us. It looks like that is now changing. The Flickr community has erupted in outrage at this latest move, which is being characterized as a way to make the process of managing accounts easier. Of course, it also makes it easier for Flickr users to access other Yahoo services. Many angry comments can be found on the Flickr forums.

Competing photo sharing services are jumping on this opportunity to draw loyal Flickr users to their communities. For instance, pay-only service SmugMug is offering a 50% discount to all Flickr defectors.
