Alternative Stem Cell Procedure
Scientists at Advanced Cell Technology have utilized a method based on pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to grow stem cell lines. A single cell is removed from an embryo and grown while the rest of the embryo goes on to divide and can be implanted into the womb. PGD was originally used by parents who wanted to check for genetic abnormalities in embryos. Scientifically, this achievement is mildly interesting, but socially, this step may help lessen the opposition to further stem cell research.
