Facebook Video to Compete with YouTube?

Amidst the news today about Facebook's Platform, which lets third-parties directly integrate their services into Facebook users' pages, was the announcement of Facebook's own in-house video sharing service.

Facebook Video will let users upload videos as well as record them directly from webcams. Users will also be able to send cellphone videos via email to video@facebook.com. However, videos will be restricted to 10 minutes in length and 200MB in size. The controversial News Feed will be used to display interesting video content to users.

In keeping with Facebook's insularity, videos will be restricted to the friends of the user who uploaded them and cannot be downloaded. YouTube's viral video embedding strategy is clearly out of the picture. In that sense, Facebook Video is not so much a competitor to YouTube as a complementary service.
