Download or Create Free Ringtones at Ringtone Soup

With the US ringtone market standing at $600 million in sales last year, ringtones are one area of the music industry that the Internet has yet to put much of a dent in, but that's changing. Sites like Ringtone Soup are popping up that let you share, rate, and create ringtones of your own.

Ringtone Soup has a bunch of social filters that let you find popular ringtones as well as a tagging system to find ringtones by theme, artists, and so on. A handy play button next to each ringtone lets you hear each one before you decide to either move on or send it to your phone. You can also create your own ringtones by uploading a music file, recording directly from your microphone, or stripping the audio track from a YouTube video.

To get it onto your phone, you can either download the ringtone using WAP (need a web-enabled phone) or get it via MMS, which only select carriers support.

Already, signs are showing that the record labels will see a $50 million decline in ringtone sales in 2007, and sites like Ringtone Soup are probably doing their share in causing it. What's the next big moneymaker for the beleaguered labels? Ringback tones. That's right, while you wait for someone to answer your call, you can hear muzack of your own choosing. This is expected to amount to $65 million worth of spending this year.
