The Venice Project: Skype Founders' New Venture
The Venice Project is apparently going to be YouTube + Professional Content. In a move reminiscent of Metacafe's Producer Rewards, which is seeking to incentivize the creation of better content, the Venice Project is looking to partner with major content producers to get professional quality videos. That's not to say that regular users can't upload content as well.
The Skype founders seem to be counting a lot on support from advertisers that are looking for a venue to show their video ads now that watching videos online has become so mainstream. To that end, users have to download a program onto their computer that will ensure the high definition of the streaming videos.
I don't see this venture succeeding unless a better value proposition than professional video + high quality ads comes along, but maybe they have something as revolutionary as Skype up their sleeves.
