The Hype Machine: Listen to Music Blogs

The Hype Machine is a music blog search engine that indexes MP3s it finds and lets you play them in a pop-up Flash player. On the downside, you can only listen, not download, the tracks. That's one way to try to avoid an RIAA lawsuit, and it also lets them affiliate link to sites where you can buy the tracks you like.

Some social filters include popular and now playing lists so you can see which tracks are hot. Interestingly, search results have a pane devoted to YouTube video results. You can also subscribe to your favorite searches via RSS.

The UI is polished, and they have all the right social media triggers. The Hype Machine might generate some hype itself.

You might also want to check out Songbird, which has been billed the Firefox of music players.
